Consumer Electronics
Drives the EDA
Industry Spurring The
Need For Innovation
With
a market sized at
780 million, up
nearly 11% from the
700 million in
2005 (itself up 7%
from 2004), the
Electronic Design
Automation market
in Europe represents
around one fifth of
the worldwide EDA
market.
This
market market
is dominated by the
so called Big Three:
Cadence Design
Systems, Mentor
Graphics Inc and
Synopsys, Inc.
However,
unlike its 3rd
position in the
worldwide ranking,
Mentor Graphics is
ranked 2nd in Europe
in 2006, where it
generates 28% of its
worldwide
business.
Despite
most worldwide
vendors
headquarters are
based in the US,
Europe is base for
two global vendors
in the Semiconductor
IP arena, namely ARM
the global
leader and
Imagination
Technologies.

Who are the customers
for EDA vendors in
Europe? In 2006 Europe
accounted for 16% of
global semiconductor
revenue or 31
billion. Europe is
home to the following
four major
semiconductor
companies:
STMicroelectronics in
Geneva, Switzerland,
Qimonda and
Infineon in Munich,
Germany, and NXP in
Eindhoven, the
Netherlands. NXP
was formerly a
division of Philips
but was spun out in
2006. Qimonda, a
supplier of DRAM
products, was carved
out of Infineon
Technologies in
2006 and went public
in August 2006. All
four are ranked by
revenue
among the top 15
semiconductor
companies in the
world. In addition
there are around 150
fabless semiconductor
companies in Europe as
well
as hundreds of system
design houses.
The
end
users of EDA products
are increasingly
involved with consumer
electronics. The
requirements of these
CE products for
mobility, low
cost and high volume
have had a significant
impact on the
direction of
the EDA industry. The
trends in the
semiconductor industry
and
corresponding trends
in the EDA industry
are discussed.
