Or was it something intentional, maybe an inpromptu Karaoke song where you were half drunk, and strutted to the stage with the confidence of a peacock and shaking your groove and belting notes thinking "Take that Beyonce!"

The question really is--would you humiliate yourself, with no assistance from Johnnie Walker or Grey Goose for the fun of it? Or to entertain friends and loved ones? Or for any other reason?

Well I was put to that test. I'm not a funny character and Lord knows my musical talents are limited to ballet and Latin dancing (Salsa, merengue). Sure I have been known to sing in the shower, but I'm more likely to sing and wiggle in my car seat while driving. But in those celebratory moments I would never subject innocent eardrums to my vocal strains or attempt to crack a joke.

However, in my commitment to raise awareness about homeless pets and engage the average person to talk about the misconceptions surrounding stray cats and cat women, I took the plunge. For National Feral Cat Day, I created a music video and yes I still can NOT sing. But that's the point.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. At least I had fun.

Let me be perfectly clear--

Yes I'm Crazy.

Yes I love Cats.

But I'm not a Crazy Cat Lady.

I'm just crazy for Cats.

Given the stereotype about cat ladies especially those who feed stray and feral cats, it was time to get crazy. While I normally feed the cats in a t-shirt, yoga pants and sneakers, I originally started feeding cats in sundresses --my uniform for work. As an outdoor walking tour guide, it gets hot in Miami, so I would feed the Riverfront cats on my way to work. As pedestrians and local residents observed, they called me "Sexy Cat Lady". Really? Wow, I'm getting older and with body parts fighting gravity, I'll take whatever crumb of a compliment I can get.

I think most women feel sexy on the inside even though we may not have the time or need to show it on the outside. That includes cat women.

So I donned my black cat costume and walked the streets of downtown Miami and Miami Beach in the middle of the day for filming this homemade video. (Honestly there are not many people outside at that time, so I wasn't as embarrassed just very hot).

The idea: cat women come from all backgrounds and professions. We are not lonely or have 30 cats. Our lives are full with regular jobs, family and giving back. There's a special quality we all share--we think of others first before ourselves. Working with homeless cats, squatting or crawling on hands and knees in gravel lots, mosquito-infested woods, to feed or rescue injured cats (and dogs), I am humbled and grateful for the little things in life.

Stray and feral cats are also harmless. Their needs are the same as humans--food, shelter and affection. They show this everyday in their body language- rubbing against a tree trunk or edge of cardboard box, or my leg. Even the feral ones are happy to see you.

Please visit my website www.riverfrontcats.com to learn more about the unique essence of stray cats, and the humane solution to control over population.

So sit back, grab a drink, and enjoy and share this video. And please laugh WITH me.
Here is a rare humorous posting of a true incident. I'm not the comedic writer but this true story is one that causes me to laugh out loud every time I retell it--you had to be there.

It was a Saturday night in Miami, the outer skirts of an edgy neighborhood Wynwood. I stress "outer skirts" and "edgy" which means DON'T STOP, DON'T SIGHTSEE, DON'T Pass Go, Go directly to Jail which is a safer place...A white sedan turns onto a street; stops, engine turned off and out tumble three women with porcelain skin; one wearing fitting jeans, loose gray shirt; the second woman with Irish red hair and wearing a coral sundress; and the third woman in short bangs and wavy brown hair sporting ala Betty Page- with- strapless- sundress- and heels. The driver in bright orange shirt and bling across the chest, gives the girls clear instructions; The driver watches the girls through rearview mirror. The sun is setting. In another neighborhood it's a romantic setting. In outer Wynwood, it could signal danger, a death warrant. The streets are quiet. The women stand on a street corner. Like pros, they begin waving their arms. Passerbys, men, are smiling. A handsome male in vivid blue vest and thrust chest, raises his voice. Is he enthralled by the women or bothered? Is he calling them or complaining?

A police officer pulls up and asks the woman in strapless dress "Are you working?" They continue conversing. Then the officer races around the corner in his police car, passes the white sedan, makes a sharp U-turn and pulls up alongside the driver. He asks the driver "Are you a local? Are you with these women?"

The women: No they are not prostitutes. What were they doing? Preventing a peacock in the middle of the road (the male creature with blue "vest" and thrust chest) from getting struck by a car! The women are employees of the ASPCA and were in town for a conference. As animal lovers, they knew the chances of this stunning peacock getting hit. Yes a peacock in the middle of a bad neighborhood. Only in Miami!
The driver: It was me! Wearing my Bebe shirt, the brand name encrusted in diamonds. The police officer was clearly concerned and advised that we leave immediately. He warned "There was a murder here last week. You don't want to be walking the streets here". I explained to the officer that I live here and the girls are visiting from New York City. To defend their actions I explained they are with ASPCA--they save animals! He didn't seem impressed but still concerned. "You should go now."
Dear, sweet, innocent Olivia wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry--she did both. "Do I look like a hooker?" I explained any attractive woman walking the streets in a dress this part of town is going to stand out--no matter her profession. Although how many hookers wear a lanyard?!
As the scenario sunk in, we burst into laughter which turned into tears. Who would ever have thought that nicely dressed women would be mistaken for a pimp and prostitutes. We weren't even wearing thigh high boots or spiked heels or mini skirt or showing cleavage.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PEACOCK?
The peacock was safe and strutted back home to his female mate. The pair are shacking up three doors down from that infamous street corner. The question is, what was the peacock doing crossing the road? And is the peacock trained for some nefarious activity? I did see him illegally parked in a handicap spot earlier... You never know in Miami.
While I am a loyal consumer, blogging about fashion brands is a rarity for me as I only select brands that offer high quality, parallel value, and creativity. Ted Baker fulfills all three tenets. But it's their marketing campaign that attracted me above all.

Attendees were encouraged to shop. No need to ask me twice! I immediately was drawn to a midi dress with vibrant print in pastel and bold colors bordered by black that swayed into the waist. While I have a small frame, I wondered if my curves would go against the style of the slim cut of the brand. Luckily with my medium height and dress size 4, the midi dress was ideal for me. After trying it on, I knew this would be my new go-to dress for occasions requiring Miami sophistication.

Ted Baker is one of the UK's fasting growing leading lifestyle brands. The collection captures the heritage of British tailoring with a thoroughly contemporary outlook. Ted's approach is focused on an unwavering attention to detail and a firm commitment to quality with little touches that make Ted Baker products stand out from the rest. It originated with menswear and has branched out to womenswear and accessories. The incorporation of Miami colors and playfulness is ideal for the Miami fashionista for style and grace.

Most impressive to me is their approach to marketing. While Ted Baker is a fictitious character, the personality of the brand, "refined by quirky", is that of the founder Ray Kelvin. Yes "quirky".

We created a shirt that everyone in the country for some wonderful reason wanted to wear. It was during the period of Acid House and Garage, and they wore these bright acidy colour shirts. These particular shirts had a really nice soft feel. Even to this day I remember it.

I created these shirts and it was like there was suddenly a famine and everyone in the country just wanted these shirts. They used to queue, no word of a lie, down the street to get the shirts on a Saturday in the five shops we had. (Ray Kelvin)

Whether intentionally or not, adding fuel to the eccentricity is the fact that very few have ever seen Ray Kelvin. He never shows his face in public. He considers himself "an ugly buggar".

As if a commitment to quality, attention to detail, a memorable refined- but- quirky style, were enough attributes to set it apart-- It is not. The vision and discipline and creativity to leverage social media instead of traditional advertising campaigns is another ingredient to their winning formula. As a preacher and practitioner of this marketing philosophy, it's easy to follow as a small business owner. But a global brand reaching £700 million is unheard of. Simply GENIUS!

Ted Baker has seamlessly harnessed all aspects of social media-twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. With catchy campaigns like #FindTed as a teaser and invitation to join the search like a hunt for a treasure chest, or #TedLovesMiami to show appreciation to a new home city, #TedtoToe to encourage fans to choose the brand for all apparel and accessories, #PinchMe, and so on demonstrate the effectiveness to ENGAGE customers and KEEP them interested. Ted Baker is not just churning out cookie cutter patterns. Ted includes the customer in the brand process. And that's exactly how I built my small business! Great minds...

Another year gone by and another BlogPaws pet conference (related to my nonprofit for pets and blogging efforts). This year it was held in Nashville, TN. I have to say I felt like a kid going to Disney World for the first time and I had no idea why I was so excited. But then I realized this trip had all the ingredients of my favorite things-- seeing all my online pet blogging friends (we communicate year round online); attending seminars to learn new tips and techniques to improve my writing/blogging efforts; and getting to explore a new city and culture AND taking someone else's tour; a reason to go shopping; AND a reason to get into character (wear cowboy hat and boots). I love costumes and dressing up; there's something alluring about the cowboy theme--all Americana, ruggedly handsome men, songs where you can understand the lyrics, polite people...! Yes this was a great trip and a bigger surprise was in store for me towards the end!

As I paraded through the Miami airport, heads were turning. Purely for my pronounced outfit--my cowboy hat and boots were screaming "country". Homeland security officers along the walkway asked me if I were going to Texas. I said "No the other "T"--Tennessee, Nashville". "Aah yes", they nodded. As a marketing lover, Branding is my favorite role.

From the airplane on our descent into Nashville, immediately I noticed the rolling green hills, manicured lawns, and friendly smiles. Nashville oozes southern hospitality and charm and also carries a celebrity vibe given that it's home to Opryland, the greatest country singers. The ABC television series, "Nashville" is also filmed in the namesake city.

TV SERIES Nashville --

As a fan of the ABC TV series Nashville, I've come to learn a lot about the culture of the city. Country music is the heart and soul of Nashville. No bones about it!

On Thursday afternoon, a couple of blogging friends from the conference and I signed up for the bus tour of sites filmed for the TV series. Unfortunately the Ryman auditorium was closed but we visited the "homes" of characters like Scarlett, Will and Deacon. The homes are privately owned and rented to ABC studios during filming season from November to April. Production costs are therefore higher and I was surprised to learn that Connie Britton only makes $100,000 per episode.
GARTH BROOKS and TAYLOR SWIFT
99% of the tour was on the bus so picture taking through the bus windows was not ideal. The buses are not permitted to stop and unload. With so many stops, it makes sense. However, we were permitted to go and sit inside the original Bluebird Cafe. It was here that one true life artist was discovered after he was rejected more times than a guitar has strings. His name is Garth Brooks. Another artist, Taylor Swift also caught her break at the Bluebird. The cafe is so popular and packed each night that ABC had to recreate it in a studio. According to the long-time manager the stage crew took the tables clothes, napkins and other objects for an authentic replication.
The Grand Ole Opry is a temple for recognizing, honoring and celebrating the best country music singers. Prior to its current location, the "Mother Church" was located at the Ryman Theater in 1943 which also housed other events and productions. The Ryman was home until 1974 when a new stage was built right outside of Nashville in the themed Opryland where hotels, outlet mall and restaurants exude the Opry spirit.

THE STAGE

In an effort to maintain continuity with the Opry's storied past, a large circle was cut from the floor of the Ryman stage and inlaid into the center of the new Opry stage. During our tour we stood on the stage and the circle. I almost expected a lightning bolt to zap me for standing on that hallowed circle given my lack of singing ability.

Sadly a devastating flood in Nashville in 2010 caused massive damage to the Grand Ole Opry including the stage. Miraculously, the circle was untouched. The circle was not broken. It was lovingly preserved during the round-the-clock renovations. Having performed on stage (as a classical dancer), gazing up at the seating, despite the blinding spotlight, I could see the crowds, feel their gaze, their embrace, hear the thunderous applause, the appreciation of the performance and artistry, the acceptance into a family. There's no feeling in the world to compare it. How I miss performing.

Girls Honky Tonk Night Out

Now that we saw Nashville in the daytime, it was time to experience the downtown at night.
So what do I wear--a Victoria's Secret sundress with cowboy boots. Yes I'm representing Miami proudly with a nod to Nashville. I even brought my cowgirl hat but Rachel wants to visit a souvenir shop and what do I find? A PINK COWBOY HAT! Now I expect this in Miami, but did not expect it in Nashville. Of course I purchased it and wore it that evening. Why not?!
After window boot shopping, hunger pangs struck and we headed to Ripley's for pulled pork with BBQ sauce and fries. When in Rome...Mouthwatering!

As we headed back to pick up the transportation bus to our hotel, we passed several bars. We had a long wait for the bus and it started pouring rain. While we sought shelter under the overhang of a building, I could hear music playing across the street. I told the girls I would return in literally 15 minutes. But then I stayed. I was going to savor every sight, taste and sound of Nashville.
As a local business owner who frequents these restaurants/bars for my popular cocktail tour, I was invited to attend the festivities. I attended with my lead tour guide James Cubby, who is also a writer for various tourist related magazines.

The Sugar Factory, as the name denotes, screams sugar and sweets. And they know how to pop! From the shiny colored pearl gumballs, to the bedazzled shelves and yellow rubber ducks, bright and eye-catching are understatements.

So on our way upstairs, we were greeted by a Willy Wonka-esque model garnished with a giant lollipop. And that is a Candy tree to the right of me, not to be mistaken for a Christmas tree. (note to self: I want this costume for Halloween!)
But the main attraction tonight was reality celebrity, Kylie Jenner, daughter of Bruce-now-Caitlyn Jenner. Apparently the Kardashian/Jenner families are big supporters and fans of the chain. I watch very little television and I have never watched the Kardashian reality TV series but I catch updates on news and late night comedy shows given their pervasive stratospheric celebrity status.
A signature candy are the embellished couture pops with a "green" angle.

Sugar Factory's Couture Pops have a reusable, plastic bedazzled stick and sucker-saving plastic top. At first I frowned then I turn to spot my bedazzled calculator even diamond covered measuring tape. I suppose I will need that couture lollipop stick after all! It's actually brilliant idea combining a simple candy to an adorned holder, like the waffle cone for the ice cream. But this is flashy, a true accessory.
As we're dining in the restaurant, the screams heightened as Kylie Jenner entered and made her rounds through the candy section and settled at a nearby booth.

A tender 17 year old, and a natural beauty without makeup, Kylie looked like a mini Kim, the hair, makeup and the revealing dress. Kim wore a similar fitting décolleté suit on the Jimmy Kimmel show. I wish I could whisper to her to expand her wings and flex her creative muscles and develop her own style.
James and I were more fascinated watching and photographing these teenagers scrambling and angling to get a photo of Kylie. Their smiles, giggles, expressions... I hope they would do the same for a smart, independently successful famous woman as well.

After our dinner, we tried to leave and were trapped. At every exit the security guard sent us to another exit only to have the next security guard tell us the same thing. Finally I insisted they pick a door to let us out. The doors opened and hundreds of faces with arms and cell phones extended clicking away. It was surreal. Instead of paper and pen extended for autographs it's all about the photo, and the possible selfie. The security guard cleared a path for us. My gosh. I actually thanked God that I was not famous. My freedom and privacy are golden.
Christine, a furniture assembler maniac, took a break and attended the Miami Wine & Food Festival. Finally a reprieve that was local, short and sweet AND delicious!

[Back to first person narration] I suppose I wasn't tipsy enough to continue regaling with tall tales. Thanks to my friend Adrienne, I was invited to join her in this food and wine tasting in upscale Merrick Park Village in Coral Gables. To read my complete review, CLICK HERE to visit MY FABULOUS FLORIDA blog.

I highly recommend it!!! If you're a local, this is better than the South Beach Wine & Food Festival which skyrocketed to a higher caste of customers. The Miami Wine & Food Festival was reasonably priced ($75), and offered a delectable selection of wineries and upscale restaurants.

A new "trend" restaurant is Meat Market but I never reached their table. However, I stumbled upon Por Fin, a one-year old restaurant in the Gables. My first impression was love at first taste. Will the rest of the menu stand up to the "melt in your mouth" first impression? Eventually I'll find out.

Several weeks ago, Ceci and I set out for an evening in MIMO land. What is MIMO? It stands for Miami Modern. When the Art Deco district started to lack luster in the 1940's and 1950's, the spotlight turned to the new hotels constructed further north around 40th street. The most famous landmarks were the Fountainebleau and Eden Roc Hotels.

So Ceci and I decided to visit the newly remodeled Fountainebleau Hotel which was unveiled last fall with a Victoria's Secret runway show.

As an official tour guide of Miami Beach with a beach strip breadth of knowledge surrounding the architecture and history of hotels dotting "America's Riviera", I had mixed emotions about visiting the Fountainebleau. Did the new owners preserve the 1950s features and spirit?

For the complete review of the hotel renovations, click here to visit my FABULOUS FLORIDA blog.

So first I beelined for the staircase. The famous "Staircase to Nowhere". As you will picture below the Staircase is still intact and still leads to nowhere as evidence by the lit-up red Exit sign at the top of the staircase. But symbolically, the staircase led to recognition. How? Well you'll just have to take my tour to find out!

The lobby is well preserved with a few updates. First, and interestingly, Miami Vice pink and blue lights emanate from the lobby's iconic bar--the Bleau Bar. I wonder what inspired the designer to use blue lights to illuminate the floor and pink for the concentric circles in the ceiling followed by a Jetson-futuristic white light orb? Eye catching indeed but a disconnect from the golden era of the 1950's.

Then we headed for the restaurants for a light meal. Scarpetta was the choice for the evening. For my review of this Italian restaurant, visit Fabulous Florida.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">The Bleau Bar long regarded as the meeting place for the celebrities

The bar is full of guests and locals, relaxing from a tiring day at the sun-drenched pool, or clubgoers anxiously waiting for the club to open its doors. LIV (pronounced "live") is a voyeuristic-design, multi-floor, high energy dance club with three, full-service bars, and music selections ranging from house, rock and hip hop. Private skyboxes with European bottle service is available for those seeking VIP treatment.

Originally we learned the entrance admission was a non-recessionary rate of $50.00. That night the rate we heard from bar guests was a palatable $20. We were invited a few times by men supposedly warned that without any females in their all male entourage, would keep them on the other side of the velvet cordon guarded by the "you-have-to-pass my eye-candy filter or slip-me-a-fifty" bouncer. This is typical of popular clubs in South Beach that are the size of sardine cans. However, I found it hard to believe it for this spacious club.

Actually, this evening was meant to catch up with my friend and the fact that my feet survived the past four hours in heels was a podiatric miracle. The thought of dancing sent needles spiking through my meta tarsels. We politely declined.

The hotel was brimming with convention attendees, locals, and other hotel guests and the energy was contagious. No matter what darkness loomed outside the hotel walls from a plaguing recession, within the confines of the hotel, everyone felt luxurious or like a celebrity. Everyone was somebody. I recommend a visit to the Fountainebleau Hotel and at the very least, a drink at the iconic Bleau bar.
I applied for the BEST JOB IN THE WORLD. In case you have been living in a cocoon and news did not reach you via the Internet or television, this job was announced in January--two months ago to the entire world!!! It gained such momentum that the server crashed within a couple of days!
What's the job? The title is Island Caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. What does the job entail? Hiking, scuba diving, exploring the island, experiencing the resorts with beauty pampering, feeding the fish, and sorting the island mail. Next, the caretaker must write a weekly blog about the adventure and conduct occasional television interviews. Lastly, the job is for six months from this July to January of 2010. The salary? $100,000 US DOLLARS and housing is FREE. The state of Queensland provides the caretaker with a three-bedroom island home.
Interested applicants were asked to send a video explaining why they would be the perfect candidate. Of course I applied! THIS JOB FITS ME TO A "T"!!! It was made for me!!! I may not sing like Beyonce to compete in American Idol, hence windows would crack. I am definitely not a supermodel, just your average girl but would consider myself in fine fettle. But I do have marketing prowess, acumen and experience. Plus I am not shy to speak on live television (having served as spokesperson for local company on TV and radio). And, I enunciate well the English language and can write coherently in English. Did I mention I author not one, not two but SIX BLOGS?! Of course you know that as prompted by my Blog Sister emails last year. Lastly, if I can generate excitement about WELDING (without the venerable Flashdance), I can PROMOTE ANYTHING!!! (Yes yours truly was marketing manager for American Welding Society).
The Great Barrier Reef is not just for experienced thrill seekers. My goal was to attract individuals, couples, and families who would not normally consider the island reef as a vacation destination. No, my goal was to dispel the myth, the fear, that dipping your big toe in the waters would attract the circling sharks. The ultimate goal was to tap into the visitor's "inner adventurer" to create a memorable trip of a lifetime. Did I mention I have a Master's Degree in Marketing?
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 85%;">Photo: Christine in her ART DECO Guide "costume"--white floppy hat, Deco sunglasses, blue geometric circle earrings and tri-pastel colored bracelet.
Sadly, my dream of bush walking among snakes, snorkeling with stingrays, scuba diving with sharks and cleaning the pool were not meant to fulfill my yearning for a sabbatical. I submitted my video only to be rejected. WHY? The Queensland Tourism sent me an email indicating my video exceeded the time limit by ONE SECOND. (How could this be--my counter said 59 seconds?). Then they offered me a chance to cut it down and resend. Strangely, that communication reached me the day AFTER the deadline. The website no longer allowed anyone to upload the video. Naturally I was heartbroken. Soon I came to the realization the Best Job in the World was not within my grasp and I continued with my humble existence.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 85%;">Photo: Christine interacts with sealife--in this case, Wally the Walrus.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 85%;">The original idea called for an inflatable shark with caption "Feed the Fish? No problem!"

HOWEVER, the truth now only becomes more painful. In reviewing the shortlist of candidates' video that was announced this week, I see SEVERAL VIDEOS that are OVER THE TIME LIMIT OF 60 seconds, even by one second! [Click here to view Anny from Canada, and Kat from Greece and their 1:01 video ]
In visiting Australia, I instantly felt an affinity toward this faraway continent in my visits to Sydney and the Gold Coast. I even applied for residency in 1999 and received it. But now, sadly, this experience leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I will still vote for a candidate and help one person reach their dreams because I know that success now hinges on Internet votes. This is not the first contest where I have tried to win a grand prize. The last one was for a kitchen makeover worth $10,000. I was the runner-up. It took Internet voting from friends, family and strangers to win. While I didn't win, I had so much fun competing.
This time, I am truly disappointed but this is shortlived. The eternal optimist, I believe there's a silver lining in every hardship and disappointment. If my candidacy was not meant to be considered at all, then this only means something greater awaits me! Perhaps Queensland Tourism will invite me as a special guest to visit the caretaker and to bring a new perspective. Two heads are better than one, right? Why would Queensland Tourism extend such a gracious invitation? Well, before this "error" or "unfair practice" reaches the media worldwide and turns into negative press and hence, less tourism for the Great Barrier Reef, such a move would be smart damage control! Or maybe I will win the Lottery, no, the POWERBALL and I can buy my own island. Truthfully, the Galapagos Islands rank number one on my LIST of ISLANDS to VISIT. Perhaps my mother's native country of Ecuador will invite me as their Island Explorer and Blogger--now there's a thought!! Hmm, I think I'm onto something here. The inhabitants of the Galapagos (giant turtles) are less intimidating than sharks and stingrays.
No more dwelling on what could have been in Australia. I'm focusing my dreams and energies toward new and loftier goals! I will create my own BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!
Below is my video application. Many thanks to the following coworkers and friends who helped me put together this video. Now you don't have to worry about feeding another mouth--my promised first born child had I won.
Victor Amador & Hugo Castillo--for our brainstorming lunch sessions. I think we needed more Doritos.
Adrienne D'Annunzio for her patience with all my props and wardrobe changes and filming me. Hey the beach water was freezing cold!!! Now I know what Sports Illustrated models have to endure in their photo shoots. It's no walk in the park.
Marcos Moure for his editing and production skills!
Babe Book

This "woman western" novel, full of Indian and Army characters from the wild west was a literary adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite my frustration that the storyline was pure fiction but the details surrounding the description of the prairie landscape, the customs and lifestyle of the Indians, and the U.S. government's treatment of the Indians classified this book as historical fiction. The latter is all true as the author expended years of research.

Upon reading the first few chapters, the main character, May Dodd, is quite the feminist for her time period in the early 1900's. It had escaped my attention, on the front cover of the book, that the author was a man. I don't believe if we ever read a book where the main character is a woman, authored by a man. In reading other reviews, only a handful of readers (all women) considered his portrayal of the female protagonist out of touch with the world of the early 1900's. I would tend to disagree. Again, upon reading the book, I had no idea the author was a man.

May Dodd, is the glue and symbol of strength for this women's group, a cross-sectional swatch of society. This motley crew of women have volunteered to serve their country by marrying the "savages" as the Indians are often called, in order to teach them the white man's culture and thus incorporate them into the "civilized world".

We learn true accounts of the different Indian tribes including their holistic lifestyle, efficient ways, and reverence for the earth. At the same time the savage within reveals their dark side. It seems neither the white man's world or the "Injun" world is perfect. Both have their wondrous ways and bucolic vices.

You will learn a lot from this book and enjoy a true adventure. There is no doubt, that brave women like May Dodd did exist and continue their outspoken habits to ensure equal rights among men!Blog Sistershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13973563783461373986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2125919092632573263.post-56583267116511188392009-05-09T10:56:00.000-04:002018-09-18T02:22:30.713-04:00South Florida Dog Rescue in TroubleAs you many of you know, I'm passionate about pets (especially dogs and cats) and helping to raise awareness and funding for various organizations including rescue organizations. This morning, in checking my emails, I came across this story from OnlyforPetLovers.com about the troubles facing Sabbath Memorial dog rescue. In this story we learn "appearances aren't always what they seem". In this case the dog shantytown, with donated used mattresses, trailers and kiddy pools, provide a happy haven for abandoned dogs.

The owner, Robbie Coy, is facing technical difficulties--zoning laws. Please read the full story. While he has not asked for any help, as a resident of South Florida or if you're just a dog lover, I encourage each of you to consider helping in some small way. Visit the site and play with the dogs, donate a nominal amount toward Robbie's uphill legal battles, or donate an item--dog food, used mattress, a cleaning crew! Now there's a thought.

There are few options for protecting abandoned dogs. The Humane Society rarely accepts them because they have a limit. The Animal Services (run by the county) will accept any dog or cat (stray or abandoned) but after a time period of no adoption, they are euthanized. Animal Services receives HUNDREDS of pets a week! There's just not enough space, people or care for thousands of dogs and cats. The bigger dogs have a lower rate of adoption for various reasons--they're not small, cute and cuddly, and many condos do not allow dogs larger than 10 pounds, and the cost of food and care is relative to their size.

Next time you're considering adopting a dog--please visit the Miami Dade Animal Services and not just the Humane Society! More on this subject on my next posting!Blog Sistershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13973563783461373986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2125919092632573263.post-46449734379598679792008-06-29T21:13:00.001-04:002018-09-18T02:20:57.188-04:00About Christine Michaels
Christine Michaels is the ultimate Miami and Florida girl. Born and raised in a small town near an undeveloped beach, this mermaid moved to the big city to expand her career. Her roots, half Hispanic, half Polish, an exotic blend as she calls herself, was a perfect match for the thriving international city.

Christine is a small business owner (Art Deco Tours, Inc and Little Havana Tours) and, founder of a nonprofit for homeless pets. Her passions are pets, travel, dancing, Art Deco and volunteerism.

Christine was the first female to start a boutique walking tour in South Beach that caters to tourists worldwide with an affinity for history and architecture, and also in Little Havana for cultural heritage, tourism beyond the glossy postcards of beaches, restaurants and nightclubs.

Before her entrepreneurial endeavors, little did she know she would become a pioneer cat blogger in the U.S. When moving to a new condo near a blighted part of downtown Miami and stumbling upon a colony of homeless cats, her life changed and she was about to embark on a new journey. Christine learned about the epidemic of homeless pets in Miami and began rescuing stray cats and kittens and more importantly educating other residents on how to help their neighborhoods. Christine knew she could not save them all and that education was key. She hosts a nominated-award blog, Riverfront Cats to educate the masses about the plight of stray, feral and black cats the most misunderstood of the cat world. Christine has been interviewed for the Miami Herald and other media outlets for her work and enjoys public speaking. Something that comes naturally to her.

Her other interests include reading, traveling, dipping into the fountain of youth (exercising), blogging and eating!

As a former colleague I am honored to write this biography to introduce Christine. Her optimism, kindness and passion is uplifting, everyone should have a Christine as a friend or colleague.

Through this blog you'll learn about Christine and her Miami lifestyle including special events, food and dining, travels around the U.S. and abroad and efforts to make a difference in your community. Living a balanced life and to the fullest is not easy but Christine is a true Libra and sets that example for a better quality of life. Perhaps through her example, we can all look 10 years longer and find the Joie of Vivre, the Joy of Life.
It's an incredible true story of how one person can make a difference.

Greg Mortenson was a rock climber who failed in his attempt to scale K2--one of many treacherous, rugged mountains in the Pakistan Himalayans. Emaciated, exhausted and wandering aimlessly upon his descent, Greg went astray from the path leading to the base camp. Villagers welcomed this dazed foreigner and nursed him back to health. Greg promised to return and build a school for the children, especially girls who had no education. Unlike countless other climbers from across the globe that promised to help these poor villagers, Greg's words did not linger and hang forever on the jagged cliffs. He returned and accomplished what no other president, world leader, diplomat, or army could do. By delivering what Pakistan could not, Greg Mortenson's mission to build schools was an unknown, simultaneous weapon to fight extreme terrorists. He built schools alongside the breeding ground of the Taliban and the madrassas.

Greg Mortenson didn't set out to be a hero, he didn't even set out to 'make a difference' - he just set out to fulfill a promise that would have been so easy to forget.

The book is action packed with detailed descriptions of the breathtaking mountains, where few have reached the pinnacle and some even awaited death at the apex; the impoverished villages and equally rich-at-heart village people; the unlikely friendships and edge-of-your seat encounters. Not only did Greg Mortenson became a hero in a region where Americans are normally hated and where hostilities and death threats are sure-fire executions, the circle of supporters would have sacrificed their lives for Greg to help improve the lives of their families and entire village. Education is the only key not only for survival but to get ahead in life. The villages knew this simple concept. It was an American from Montana, that made it possible.

After reading this book, Greg Mortenson will become your hero, as he now is mine, next to Mother Teresa (Greg also has an "encounter" with this larger-than-life figure). I can't wait for a book-turned-movie version!

It's no wonder this book has ranked in NY Times best-seller's list for over 100 weeks.

Given the unprecedented zealous, world-wide media attention to a U.S. Vice-Presidential candidate and realizing that the subject of Sarah Palin is like coconut--very bipolar--you either love her or hate her, I encourage anyone with an open-mind to read her book. If you are beholden to her ideals, then you'll love the book. If you are married to utmost disdain, don't waste your time.

For an open-minded person or non-Americans who are curious, you may not come to endear Sarah or agree with her political beliefs, but non-biased readers may appreciate the insider pressure-cooker tactics and strategy of a national presidential campaign, her courage and conviction to take on big oil and her own party, and her strength as a woman, wife, and mother when faced with a life or death decision!

A lesson for me: YOU CAN SEE RUSSIA FROM ALASKA!!! [Read on for more].

While I had my doubts about her, I have to say a majority of them vanished after reading her book.

A rumor to clear up before I begin the review:

One complaint I heard at the watercooler was "She didn't even write the book. Someone ghostwrote the book". This is NOT uncommon. Many politicians and celebrities and power businesspersons have either ghostwriters or SUPER editors. I once freelanced as a ghostwriter for a CEO. When you're beyond busy with break-neck speed schedules and lofty goals, you find resources. Even CEO's don't write their own content for company-wide communications. It's either a PR person or legal attorney. Bottomline, the "author" approves the book. It's still written in Sarah's folksy tone and vocabulary. She remained true to her self.

Next, after watching highlights of interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric, I instinctively suspected Sara had not received formal media training on how to handle national media. I walked in her shoes but in smaller heels and know her struggles. Dealing with media in Alaska as Mayor of Wasilla and later as Governor is nowhere near the shark tank of the national media. I choked too in my media interviews--and that was the training segment.

Did I enjoy the book? I did for many reasons.

First the book paints a picture of her childhood and upbringing and shows pictures throughout her adolescence. How many children go hunting early morning before school? Hunting was not about sport but about sustenance. The closest store was an hour away. They hunted for survival. Just reading this part and her frugal habits, you immediately know that later charges of her spending obscene amounts on suits was just poor reporting to discredit her. The book continues to unfold with how she met her husband and the small business they ran together.

(While I was impressed with Barak and Michelle Obama's no-frills clothes shopping choices such as J Crew, of all the politicians in my lifetime, Sarah Palin trumps them all in FISCAL CONSERVATIVENESS. Besides, what politician gives up a private jet and sells it on e-Bay of his/her own volition?!). I don't think I would have.

Like most of the books I read, this is about a woman of strength. Unbelievable strength. How she juggled a family of four and now five children while running for mayor, then governor and won by a landslide with bare bones funds is remarkable. She ran all her campaigns as basic grassroots. One favorite part when campaigning on her own--in the dead of winter, pitch black, knocking door to door, towing her children in a red wagon. Now that is determination and commitment!

She never waivered in her commitment to her family and children even when others in the political realm frowned upon her for "running back to Alaska" so she could say goodbye to her son before his deployment to Iraq. Sarah stuck to her priorities.

LIFE OR DEATH
Just when you wonder how a mother can juggle heavyweight responsibilities, she learns that she is pregnant with her fifth child AND that her expectant son has Down's Syndrome. Sarah's emotional struggle will drive you to happy tears.

THE INTERVIEWS
The clips of the interviews with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric were uncomfortable for me to watch and relive in her book. Sarah shares her thought process of what was going through her mind. I could definitely relate! You more or less discuss the interview with the station beforehand. You think you're going in one direction and the reporters will try to derail you. Sarah clearly was not media trained on how to get back on track. She wanted to start with accomplishments in Alaska. When Sarah was asked about the Bush Doctrine, my immediate response was "which one?". Political analyst and commentator George Will had the same response on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopolous.

But I can see how the average person may judge her as plain stupid. What was she thinking in her response when asked about US foreign policy towards Russia? Certainly with national security and foreign policy experts like Randy Scheunemann and Steve Biegun on the campaign staff, they would have tested Sarah's knowledge and ensured she was up to snuff. Again it's cause to wonder what was happening behind the scenes.

and worse... As often happens in the media world, that dirty act of "editing". News should report a "balanced" story. But often it's slanted. I recall when I was interviewed as spokesperson for my employer during a crisis. The final interview was "edited" and most of my direct responses were left out which left doubt about my employer's integrity. It couldn't be further from the truth. The same happened to Sarah. It happens everyday to more than just politicians.

Sarah, quite knowledgeable in clean energy and oil production in her own right, was ready to discuss the issue which speaks to one of the tenets of the campaign by both camps, less dependence on foreign oil. She never had that chance during the interviews.

But the title of the book is repeated a few times for the harsh criticism by the omninous "headquarters" that lashed at her for "going rogue" or off script. In other words, when she was honest and failed to speak word-for-word from a script like a Hollywood movie actor, she was scolded. "Going rogue" was the eigth deadly sin and the wrath of HQ was boiling to mercurial levels.

SARAH PALIN IS HUMAN TOO
A few times Sarah acknowledges her limitations, and some mistakes and weaknesses. When first asked about her knowledge of the Iraq war by a McCain foreign policy adviser, her response was "I know as much as the average American".

Before being picked as McCain's VP, Sarah admits to criticizing Hillary Clinton for the perception of whining when Clinton publicly pointed out some of the media's favoritism.

Still before criticizing her [Clinton] on this point, I should have walked a mile in her shoes. I can see now that she had every right to call the media on biased treatment that ended up affecting her candidacy. In fact, I should have applauded her because she was right--Democrats deserved to see a fairer picture of what they were getting into before they cast their primary votes.

Should Secretary Clinton and I ever sit down over a cup of coffee, I know that we will fundamentally disagree on many issues, but my hat is off to her hard work on the 2008 campaign trail. Compared to the guys she squared off against, a lot of her supporters think she proved what Margaret Thatcher proclaimed: "If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman."

Sarah Palin is no doubt a new kind of politician. She's a homegrown leader clearly not shaped by the Washington style of politics. She morally struggled with offering scripted "nonanswers" to questions rather than just answering them directly as ordered by "headquarters". She offers a few examples in the book. When I compare any number of televised debates of past presidential candidates versus Sarah's speeches in Alaska, or debates she sparred in her home state, I do not believe she is lying on this point.

SARAH IMPERSONATES TINA FEY
While not an eloquent orator like Reagan, or Clinton or Obama, throughout her book Sarah remains true to her style of speaking plainly, even if it's Alaska folksy. But in our materialistic world, we put a lot of stock in pretty packages and Hollywood, especially young people. When Tina Fey (of Saturday Night Live) did the impersonation of Sarah and said "I can see Russia from my house" (which Sarah NEVER said), viewers and voters remember that line more than the actual one. Actually Sarah impersonated Tina Fey long before the SNL skits at Halloween time.

Many voters listened to Hollywood and never did their homework. This was a flashback to my own community where residents voted for candidates with fantastical stories rather than research the facts. Or given the facts they ignore it! People love a good story, whether it's factual or grossly false. Sad but true.

WHAT OTHER BLOGGERS HAD TO SAY
In reading another blogger's review of the book, he spewed venom in every sentence with no reasoning to support them. In his least lethal comment, he referred to her "Sesame-street cadence" way of talking. This proves my point-- it's all about the packaging. Does no one care about her track record and accomplishments?

It gets worse, one "atheist blogger" claims that Jesus really hates Palin and shows a painting of Jesus giving her the finger. Where does this profound hatred stem from? She's not a hardened criminal! The ugly world of politics. It was equally wrong of media to hint Barak Obama was associated with terrorists because of his middle name. I admire politicians' strength to forge ahead despite the inherent barrage of distorted news reporting. If you give up, you never win.

Another blogger stated Sarah was "relitigating the entire campaign". OK--it's her book, her chance to share her side of the story that we didn't see or hear because she was under strict script scrutiny (say that three times fast).

As I said before, putting aside any differences in fundamental or political beliefs, one can admire her as a person, a mother. Here is one fair review by a proclaimed liberal.

For a review by a "third party" here is one by Peter Durward Harris from England.

GEOGRAPHY LESSON
Oh yes, it's fact you can see Russia from Alaska! I did not know that and admit I thought Sarah was trying to make a joke and fell flat on her face. Click here for a geography lesson. Looks like I'm the ignorant one on that point.

POST ELECTION
When I heard and now re-read the relentless, acrimonious attacks against Sarah and her family immediately AFTER the election, it was obvious that senior McCain staffers were bitter for losing and wanted to square blame on Sarah. Later she, and her staff learned of the Democrats (including current Obama staffers) who were behind the onslaught of investigations even after she lost the election! She was cleared of all ethics investigations but it cost her family dearly and even her own staff had to pay for attorneys out of their pockets. (It's Alaska law). But that was the goal--to bankrupt her financially and emotionally. A colossal waste of time for the Alaskan people. It's no wonder Sarah Palin resigned.

How did she remain kryptonite strong and teflon resilient? Much like Reagan? Most of us would have crumbled by this point, or checked into an insane asylum. Where does she find the strength? A woman secure in herself as a wife, mother and leader, her incredible discipline and work ethic, AND her solid faith and belief in God's goodness! Yes those are admirable qualities. Plus she's a runner! Ok, now I am jealous! She's in better shape than me. Good for her!
However, I was surprised as to the extent of this cat's ability in uplifting an entire community, his story that made news around the world.

Dewey starts like many "rescue" stories where he was dumped, in this case, in the book-return slot of the town library of Spencer, Iowa. Lucky for this ginger, frost-bitten kitten, Vicky Myron the library director, found him and nursed him back to bouncing health.

The staff is endeared by this orange furball and Vicky entreaties the board of directors to allow him to stay at the cost of individual staff and not library funds. Baptized Dewey Readmore Books, he proves his worthiness. This stray cat earned international fame and recognition not just for himself, but for the small town of Spencer, Iowa. This is a valuable lesson for any neighborhood, town, hotel or condo with a flock of stray cats. The situation can be turned around to everyone's advantage. Even economic gains, but it has to be a genuine story.

I know animals are intelligent. However, this cat takes the prize until I read or learn about other cats of equal or greater abilities. Dewey was sociable thus disspelling the myth that cats are standoffish. He literally welcomed the morning library guests. Like many pets, he follows a routine. After salutations, he heads to the children's room where he carefully selects his resting point. Most impressive of all, Dewey melts the hearts of curmudgeon members, and even more amazing, he helps a little girl with special needs to come out of her dark shell.

A small tight-knit farming town has its advantages and disadvantages. With regard to the latter, hostilities may arise between residents even family members. Dewey with diplomatic repetoire, eases tensions between a strained mother and daughter or even coworkers. (If only there was a Dewey for every office).

That ability and his social skills also make for an ideal poser. Yes Dewey posed on cue for photographs like a supermodel. Soon word spread to neighboring counties. The unknown town was now receiving visitors from out of town, across state lines, and soon internationally. A Japanese film crew flew half way around the world to film the library cat. The library's email inbox exploded to the verge of crashing. Keep in mind, visitors had to drive three hours from the closest main town to make it to Spencer, Iowa.

The reader will learn about the landscape, economy and the people of a midwestern town in 1988. You will also follow the life triumph and trials of the author and library director, Vicky Myron. Dewey's life was inextricably linked to Myron, the town, the staff. The world was his audience.

The most important lesson of all, this story supports the growing studies and evidence that cats aid people with medical and physical ailments and do wonders for our health.Blog Sistershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13973563783461373986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2125919092632573263.post-5928292721109031212010-05-04T12:53:00.000-04:002018-09-13T13:58:14.050-04:00Christine Meets Greg Mortenson
My mother Elizabeth, me, and Greg Mortenson

Greg Mortenson-- a skilled nurse, talented mountain-climber, amateur fundraiser, and possessing the patience of an old oak tree is really, for lack of a better word--a saint. Not a hero, a saint.

While some reviewers offered slight criticism of his famed book (Three Cups of Tea, click here for my review) that the storytelling was dry and read more like an upbeat news report, the story alone is a miracle. Everyone should read this book. It is educational, uplifting, powerful, riveting, breathtaking and will leave you breathless.

As it turns out, the subject of most of the books I read is about the strength of one person, usually a woman, who survives incredible obstacles, pain, suffering without shattering mentally and physically into a thousand pieces. But Three Cups of Tea is not the self depending on one's self strength, worth and atonement. Rather the livelihood of others depends on you. Parents can relate. But what about a group of people with absolutely no familial blood lines or who don't even live on the same continent, are depending on you? "The world rests on your shoulders" is but an understatement.

Three Cups of Tea breathes new life to the over-wraught dictum that "one CAN make a difference." So when my mother and I were next in line for the meet-greet-book signing, with Greg Mortenson, the first thing she exclaimed "You should have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!" I have to agree. Greg didn't just talk the talk (sorry but with all due respect to our President, how can anyone nominate him when he hadn't accomplished anything yet), he walked the walk and single-handedly fought back the terrorists without weapons, but by providing schools for village girls.

Hmm, incorporating the intelligence of a woman into everyday community affairs including the process of fighting evil doers! What a concept!

I was honored to meet Greg, shake his hand, and thank him for his valiant efforts. He should be canonized for his heart of spirit, devotion and miraculous feats! I second my mother's nomination!
It is a lot of work but very rewarding. The Cat Network provides low cost spaying/neutering and vaccinations. We pay out of our pockets but the reduced cost is still a savings and benefits the cats and the community!

Well now you can help by Voting for the Cat Network to win a $25,000 donation.

Are you looking to give back to your community? To volunteer your time or offer your skills to make a difference? Do you have strong desire to do more than just write a check?

In this economy many are grateful for their jobs, their health, their families. I know I am truly blessed for all of the above. My mother always raised me to give thanks for what I have, to give back, even in time of need. But writing a check was too easy and not as joyous. Then I stumbled upon a cause by accident where I make a tremendous difference with my time and skills and it is so rewarding! Won't you join me?

If you're an animal lover and like cats, then you can help with just a couple of hours of your time. Even if you think you're not a cat person, believe me, spending one day with these creatures and you will discover their unique traits, personalities, habits, antics, and a possibly a new love! This is a great way for students to fulfill their community service requirements!

The Cat Network is in desperate need of volunteers!
It's kitten season, and hundreds of homeless kittens are born everyday that shelters and organizations are overflowing. You can help in different ways and it's so easy and fun! Best of all--it's absolutely uplifting!

a. Foster a kitten or a few (we'll teach you how) until they are old enough to be adopted. You do have to be a CN member but it's only a $25 fee.

b. Supervise and show kittens at pet store adoption centers once a week or once a month. So they are not cooped up all day, that human touch and interaction is important to keep them socialized.

c. Help with TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) homeless cats in your neighborhood or nearby. Cat Network will teach you how.

We are a network of volunteers from all professional backgrounds--teachers, lawyers, small business owners, housewives, scientists and other professionals. We are too few volunteers to care for record number of homeless kittens due to the recession--people dumping their indoor cats, unspayed/un-neutered, into the streets!

For example, the PetSmart in Midtown, PetSmart across from the Falls, and the new PetSmart in Coral Way are in need of volunteers! The Cat Network operates the adoption centers and we need responsible, animal-loving volunteers to help supervise, show cats to potential adopters and/or clean cages.
How exciting! I received a call this weekend from my mother who picked up the latest issue of Brickell magazine. Her voice quivered with excitement and pride. "Honey you are featured in the magazine!"

That evening she brought the issue and I also ran to my computer to check for a digital version.

Under the "Entrepreneur" section, the title was "Kitty Care". The article spoke about the conception and the event called Le Chat Noir, the Cat Network's inaugural Black Cat Gala, to raise awareness about uniqueness of black cats, reduce euthanization rate while increasing their adoption rate.

Here is the link: http://www.brickellmag.com/digital/BM/7_11/files/44.html
To magnify the page, just click on the article. Below are the captions for each photo featured in the article.

Except there was a misstatement in the article that I need to correct here. It was NOT the state of Maryland that mandated not to send black kittens. It was the shelter in Bowie that made the call.
(Note: Please know the article was the draft the reporter wrote and I had corrected it but the reporter is no longer with the magazine. I had sent several emails to the reporter and editor with corrections but this was earlier in the year. )
Brickell Magazine is a high end magazine focusing on the Brickell area which is downtown Miami. Brickell is often referred to as the "Manhattan of the South" but obviously on a smaller scale. It includes both upscale, high rise condominiums south of 15th Street, and bank buildings north of 15th and an increasing number of moderate to high end restaurants.

Here's to raising awareness and making a difference!
I am very excited to announce, Le Chat Noir, an elegant soiree to be held October 2nd in the Design District . While the theme is the black cat, it's really an event for ALL animal lovers to raise awareness for homeless cats.

Our guest celebrity is none other than Christopher R. Coppola and his biker cat, Otto. Like a parrot affixed to a pirate's shoulder, Otto rarely leaves Christopher's side. You may have seen Christopher and Otto on the Animal Planet riding a motorcycle, their favorite mode of transportation. Even Otto has his own biker seat and sports wind goggles! And he has quite a following on Facebook.
It's the New Year!

It is true--as you age, every year goes by faster and faster. At the age of 43 turning 44 in October, the year 2012 was a whirlwind. My goodness, does this mean when I'm in my 50's time moves at lightning speed? Anyone? (feel free to comment below).

With all the noisemakers, clinking of champagne glasses, smiling faces and hopes of a better year, it soon dissipates and the celebratory atmosphere is quickly followed by the dreaded word "Resolutions". Such a weighted word, don't you think? Perhaps since most people associate it with goals of weight loss and the low success rate, the word resolution is often associated with failure. It can be daunting.

So many years I have made resolutions and not a single one involved weight loss. My life increasingly grows in complexity, mostly because I choose to take on hefty challenges revolving around a nonprofit I started. At the onset of the New Year, I keep it simple. When curve balls are thrown my way, I reflect on those resolutions I have achieved. Only two I never fulfilled

One year it was to learn to dance merengue and salsa. CHECK. (I was in my 20's living at home; no responsibilities other than my two jobs).

1997 move out on my own to Miami. CHECK.

1998 to get my Master's Degree, CHECK.

2000 to buy my first condo, CHECK. in later years to learn to dance advanced Salsa, CHECK (although I never used it);

Next year to learn belly dancing CHECK (again I never used it).

To read more books, CHECK (even started a book club with my friend).

2006 Learn to dance Tango. NEGATIVE.

2007 Learn French. NEGATIVE.

2009 Start a small part-time business. CHECK.

2012 Start a nonprofit. CHECK

With career advances and other growing family responsibilities, it means less time for yourself. Losing a job can send your life in a tailspin and survival means forgoing fun goals like learning the Tango and French.

I don't look at years 2006 and 2007 as failures. I simply could not dedicate the time due to life emergencies. One of my strongest attributes is that when I make a commitment, I see it through 100% or more. I may not be a genius, or scored high on my SAT's. But I'm a hard worker and complete any job or task to the end. The reality is emergencies do occur and managing and overcoming them is a triumph. I pulled through dark times without getting into debt, or borrowing money or asking for help. I survived on my own and those are the greater accomplishments than my New Year's resolution.

But I'm back on track. So what is my resolution this year? A big one for me. To fine tune my time management skills and prioritizing tasks. It's easy for me to get distracted with fun tasks and procrastinate on the more important ones. Sorry to disappoint any readers. My resolution is nothing sexy like learning the Tango or French language. But putting it in writing will encourage me to make an earnest effort. Starting now. So instead of shopping online for new office furniture, I'm going to work on writing that article.
The New Year is here! Did you celebrate in style with pomp and jazz and all those noisemakers? Or did you keep it simple and quiet? Either way, entering the New Year is no longer confined to a decorum of loud parties and Niagara-Falls-rushing of champagne and liquor. A quiet evening at home with loved ones or friends, sharing a homecooked meal and some sparkling cider or the real Perrier Jouet at the stroke of midnight, is as much a celebration. For a celebration of life, health, family and friends and the hope for a better year has no strict definition. It's not always about the money and parties.

For many, the economic hurricane of 2008 has caused us to pause and reflect on priorities in life. Do we really need the shiny new model flatscreen TV or iPhone after purchasing one just a year ago? Probaby not.

The United States is still the land of opportunity and personal freedom, a garden of Eden. However, stemming from these opportunities are the forbidden fruits--unlimited credit --the hidden trap for maintaining ten or more credit cards, acquiring the latest appliances and electronics, or purchasing a new car every three years. How many of us live on the edge or beyond our means? 2008 was a wake up call. Do I really need a precious stone the color of bright hard candy and as big as an apple? No. Do I want one? Sure, in hot pink too ( the color of the year).

But alas, we have eaten the forbidden fruit and now are summoned to offer penance. No more fine dining where a glass of wine costs as much as the bottle in the supermarket. No more designer handbags and brand-name labels. Can we, as Americans who closet-worship ourselves more than any God, in the form of consumerism actually correct our myopic religion and put our future first? According to all the statistics, Americans repeatedly fail at upholding their New Year's resolutions, whether it's weight loss, the cessation of smoking, or saving a dollar a day.

But to suggest that most people will never change, no matter how much they want to, seems almost, well, un-American. After all, this is a country born of change (revolution), and our most cherished historical archetypes (the Pilgrims, the pioneers, the rags-to-riches entrepreneurs) are parables of reinvention. Bookstore shelves are swollen with the latest self-help books, and life-change gurus like Anthony Robbins, Dr. Phil and, yes, Oprah are pop-culture icons.

So what to do? Quit your job, sell your home, and live like a gypsie in the prairie land-a euphemism for a well-dressed homeless person. Perhaps without all the fancy cars speeding down the highway, designer clothes purposefully hanging off size zero mannequins, and TV commercials for Tiffany's jewelry, we might be grateful for what we have and do not need. Ok--it was a thought. Seriously, I think of the Amish population and their simple, home economic ways of living. Maybe a retreat in Amish country will remind us of what's truly important--health, a roof over our head, and nourishment.

Maybe starting small by taking leisurely walks with a friend, loved one or pet, we can appreciate the fresh air, the green trees, our limbs for walking, the intact homes and modern technology in the form of transportation. A great place for reflection, is, yes, Church, or Temple or Synagogue. Think of Church as a spiritual book club. Reading parables and interpreting it's poetic meaning for direction and clarity. Church is a great starting place for reflection and change. Another idea is volunteer work. If you had a difficult year, there are countless others who endured tougher times. Helping others less fortunate can be transforming.

It's all about going back to the basics. Taking a breather from the rat race and turning off the endless din of doom and superficial glamour on the TV, America can and will reign the New Year with a stronger sense of self preservation and self worth. We're not just dreamers, we are doers! We're all in this economy together. Let's act together!

Wishing you a prosperous 2009!
Blog Sistershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13973563783461373986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2125919092632573263.post-63051412969825061812010-01-01T03:00:00.000-05:002018-09-13T13:54:38.392-04:00Happy New Year!
New Year's Eve in Sydney, Australia

Sydney is my second favorite city in the world, next to Washington DC, where I spent Christmas with family. What's in Australia other than burping blokes and surfing dudes and dudettes? More relatives, the nicest people and an incredible culture.

I've had the opportunity to visit Sydney and the last time was 10 years ago for the millenium. It was my dream and goal. Then I remembered, I have reached every goal I set. I am truly blessed to be born in the USA where in America you can do anything! Life is a journey but also an adventure!

Here's wishing a brighter New Year for all people around the world.
While the air is moist here in Miami, not cold and crisp like a Dicken's novel, I have accustomed to listen to traditional Christmas songs indoors, set the air condition to a freezing 73 degrees, wrap myself in a scarf, while gazing out my kitchen dining window at swaying palms, choppy blue and green bay water and neighbors splashing in the clear blue pool and bouncing a fuzzy green tennis ball across the net. This is Christmas in Miami, not white but blue and green and I am thankful it is not below freezing temperatures.

Despite difficult times around, I am grateful for many blessings. For my family, for good health, for the improved health of my mother after an accident this August, for my friends and their support during a recent loss, for my children (pets) and their unconditional love and the valuable lessons they teach me, for having a beautiful home, and a stable job with health benefits. Despite some difficult moments this year, I am still blessed in many ways.

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas. No matter your religion, my Christmas wish is a wish of new beginnings, joy, hope and peace for all mankind.Blog Sistershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13973563783461373986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2125919092632573263.post-39310368302065962912009-12-25T22:11:00.000-05:002018-09-13T13:52:05.337-04:00Merry Christmas The air is a chilly 39 degrees and snow blankets every grassland.
In the spirit of the royal wedding, I've been looking for The Hat to wear this Friday and had no luck this weekend on Lincoln Road. So I wondered how many people or women will wear hats more often now or just for the day of the wedding of Prince William and Kate? Even more curious, how many of you will wake up before dawn to watch the Royal Wedding?

It still amazes me how fashion trends are ignited and spread with fury by one person alone. More recently, the fashion craze was lead by Lady Gaga, but since the engagement of the Prince and his long-time girlfriend, Kate Middleton has set a ablaze a new record for more web searches, Facebook mentions, and YouTube videos. It's all about the soon-to-be-Princess and what she wears. Times never change.
To see more Nigel Rayment hats and learn what the peacock fuss is about the "fascinator" visit my shopping blogs for more outlandish hats and hairpieces including one worn by Sarah Jessica Parker.
