Former President of Costa Rica Oscar Arias receives ABiCC 2005 Award for Leadership in Global Trade

The former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Prize Winner, Oscar Arias, received the ABiCC 2005 Award for Leadership in Global Trade during a Gala Dinner organized by the Association of Bi-National Chambers of Commerce in Florida (ABiCC). The Award was presented to him by ABiCC's chairman Lita Haeger during the event that is part of the annual ABiCC World Business Week. It is awarded to a leader whose actions have had a major impact on international trade as well as the well-being and prosperity of the people in the winner's country or region.

The event that was organized in Dr. Arias' honor was attended by the consular corps, the presidents of 43 bi-national chambers of commerce, as well as numerous businesspersons and entrepreneurs. During the dinner, Dr. Arias declared his support to the Central American Free Trade Area (DR-CAFTA) that would remove trade barriers between the USA, the Dominican Republic and 5 countries of Central America. He said that this was a unique opportunity for Central America to develop into a dynamic and integrated region that is in phase with the current globalization of free trade and technology. He admitted that it would be irresponsible to believe that free trade by itself would be sufficient to solve the problems of underdevelopment and poverty in the region, but that what is important is how society will utilize the opportunities and responsibilities offered by a more open and competitive world.

Dr. Arias was the President of Costa Rica from 1986 to 1990, and is currently a candidate for the next presidential elections that will be held in early 2006. He attained international recognition when he launched his peace initiative in the central american region that was plagued with civil wars in the 1980's. The initiavie culminated with the signing of a treaty by all the presidents of the 5 countries in the region. For this effort, Dr. Arias received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987.

For full text of the speech of Dr. Arias, please enter here.

Dr Oscar Arias received the Key of Miami Dade
County at a Gala Dinner in his honor in Miami.

The FTAA branding of Miami as the Gateway to the Americas:
What does it mean?

We know that Miami is the ideal place for the future Permanent Secretariat of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), because of its excellent air connections, stability, security, financial resources, legal expertise, geographic location, and more, well ahead of any other competing city, BUT:

  • Will this be sufficient in making Miami the political and financial capital of the Americas?
  • Can Miami become the Brussels of the Americas?
  • Is the "branding" sufficient in attracting international companies to establish in Miami, thereby bringing substantial increase in employment and prosperity to our community?
  • What about other crucial issues that are not necessarily in the control of Miami, such as immigration policies, homeland security, cost of living, taxation?
  • Can Miami mature into the league of major regional centers such as Singapore and Hong Kong, without being in total control of its destiny?
  • What are the existing incentives to attract business to Miami, and what incentives should there be?
  • How will the branding of Miami as the Gateway to the Americas by the FTAA offices impact the various industries, such as tourism/conventions, real estate, banking, transportation and media?

These important issues and more will be presented and discussed by our professional industry leaders on:

Monday, October 27
Merrick Room, Conference Center of the Americas
Biltmore Hotel
Coral Gables

Registration starts at: 3.30PM
Seminar starts at: 4:00PM sharp!
Seminar ends at: 6:00PM

Attendance is complimentary, but reservation is mandatory due to limited space, latest Thursday, October 23, only by sending your name, company name and telephone number by email at: ftaa@abicc.org.

ABICC LUNCHEON WITH DR JOSE PIÑERA FROM THE "CATO INSTITUTE"

RULE OF LAW BUILDS SUCCES OF A NATION

During a luncheon hosted by the ABiCC, the Chilean economist and former cabinet minister Jose Piñera said that the key to the US success story has been the rule of law based on the Constitution, an element that has not been the case in Latin America. Mr. Piñera said that Latin America had founding generals, not founding fathers. The Latin American founding generals all died in exile or by murder, while the American founding fathers died quietly in their homes. Mr Piñera is the region's leading advocate of privatizing social security, and over 50 million people in Latin America have now private pension accounts following his privatization plans, as well as 20 million in Eastern Europe.

Jose Piñera observed that Latin American leaders too often tried to cling to power at any cost, by changing the constitution. This led to mediocre leadership and corruption. He was quite critical of current leaders in the region, saying that referring to them as "His Excellency" should be replaced by "His Mediocrity". He said that the countries of the region could all be successful, if free-market reforms are enforced and limits are set on the power of governments, while establishing independent judiciary. The lack of transparency is also a major factor to the region's problems, and the countries of Latin America come far down the list of the most transparent nations, except Chile on 17th position after the United States on 16th position. He also pointed out that private property must be protected by law in order to achieve honesty and trust.

The ABiCC luncheon at the Inter-Continental Hotel in downtown Miami was well attended by the international business and consular community in Miami that is interested in the future of Latin America.
