I can't seem to find molasses in London. Is there a subsitute? I found Agave Nectar. Is this the same thing?

You should find it in any health food shop eg Holland and Barratt. Ask at a large Sainsburys. It's probably in a specialist section. Good luck

Don't ask me why I remember this. Just confirmed it in Wikipedia. Molasses in GB is called treacle.
Reply:I have bought Molasses in Holland and Barrett, and recently I found one in Tesco's, but I think it may be only in the larger stores and called Meridian Organic. You should be able to find it in any health food store.

I think Black Treacle is made by refining Molasses and although not quite the same it could be used as a substitute.
Reply:For a molasses substitute, you can use any of the following:

1 cup of molasses = 1 cup of honey

1 cup of molasses = 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 cup of molasses = 1 cup dark corn syrup

1 cup molasses = 1 cup pure cane syrup

Agave Nectar is not the same thing as molasses. It's an artificial sweetener.
Reply:If you want malasses to smoke on a nargila or hooka pipe try camden market. i bought some there last time i went
Reply:Many of the major stores should have them if they don't you can order on line at the link below, also you could try using Lyle’s Golden Syrup, Maple syrup or brown sugar.

Reply:Health Food shops sell molasses. If unable to buy from one, then a grocer or supermarket will sell (green) Treacle which is very similar. There is no substitute.

P.S. USA will refer to molasses in cooking, and UK treacle.
Reply:Yeah, there's a good place in Camden Market. Northern Line, Camden Town, Bob's your uncle.

If they don't have any there, go to this bloke who works in the Ground Floor Pub in Notting Hill, sit there for a while, until someone sits next to you, and turn to them and ask for molasses. It might be a bit solid, and you might find yourself smoking it, but hey,by then what do you care?
Reply:use honey for a substitute in any recipe you find. it has the same molecular composition as molasses just not as dense and

fatty.
Reply:No, Agave Nectar is not remotely the same.

Try black treacle syrup

Reply:Molasses is just another name for treacle. You can pick up a tin of treacle in the sugar section of any supermarket.

The Tate and Lyle version comes in a shiny red tin.

Happy Christmas x
Reply:Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molasses

Quote: Cane molasses is a common ingredient in baking, often used in baked goods such as gingerbread cookies. There are a number of substitions that can be made for molasses; for a cup of molasses the following may be used (with varying degrees of success): 1 cup honey, or ¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar, or 1 cup dark corn syrup, or 1 cup pure maple syrup.

Unquote.

As someone has already said, in the UK molasses is known as treacle.

  1. Just a little note...agave is not an artificial sweetener. It is natural and is lower in sugar, affecting your glycemic index less. It is wonderful!
