NORTH END (a.k.a. BULL & BUSH)

(never opened)

North End station, also known as Bull And Bush station, was intended as a station between Hampstead and Golders Green - the decision to abandon the project was taken only after the lower parts of the station had already been constructed. Surface access was only provided in the 1950s when the below ground area was adapted for use as a floodgate control room for the London Underground. A staircase and a manually operated lift provided the access from top to bottom. The access building on the surface can be seen in Hampstead Way.

197 steps is clearly more of a problem coming up than going down.
Had this station ever opened, it would have been the deepest in London, in terms of depth below ground level. As it is, its neighbouring station, Hampstead, is the deepest station in passenger use.

The arrangement is strange: steps have to be navigated before the lift shaft is reached. Not conducive toward easy passage of equipment.

The passageway above has a t-junction. Continuing straight, a dual-level equipment room is reached. This is the lower level.
