TABLEAUX-VIVANTS/ CONSTRUCTION (MODELS) #04

A ‘scaffolding’ and a ‘stage’ were constructed around a ruin in a park as if renovation works were going on.
The construction is the setting for the film. The blue screen on the scaffolding functions as the blue sky in the film. Groups of people assume a pose for a short period of time. The participants in these Tableaux vivants are not actors who do things or express emotions, but abstract figures. The change in the shadows, light and range of coloring in the background brings a dimension of time in these video paintings.

The video was presented as an installation in BOZAR for the ’Prix Jeune Peinture Belge’. The installation consisted of two video pieces: The Ideal City (portraits) (2002) and Tableaux Vivants (construction model) # 04 (2003). Both videos deal with the concept of a garden. The room contained some props used in the film and was an abstraction of a garden as well.
