What is the CAO?
The California Association of Orthodontists (CAO) is the California component of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO)—the largest and oldest dental specialty organization. The CAO represents nearly 1,500 orthodontic members who practice in California. CAO members are specialists who have completed dental school and then successfully completed 2–3 years of additional training at an accredited orthodontic residency program. Our members are experts in diagnosing and treating all orthodontic problems in patients of all ages—from child to adult. Whether a patient is considering clear aligners or traditional braces, orthodontists have the expertise and the treatment options to make sure they get their best smile.

Members receive an abundance of resources to assist in building and maintaining their orthodontic practices. Orthodontists practicing in California join at the national (AAO) level and are automatically admitted to the constituent (PCSO) and component (CAO) organizations, gaining access to member benefits for each organization.

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be over 54,000 new oral cancer cases just in 2024. In recent decades, the survival rate of these cancers has risen considerably, and early detection is a huge part of that. That`s why we`re using Oral Cancer Awareness month to educate our patients about oral cancer`s symptoms and risk factors.
There are unavoidable risk factors: men are twice as prone to oral cancer as women and it affects people over the age of 45 much more. 👨👩 Preventative care and early detection are especially important for people in these categories.
Other risk factors can be controlled. By far the biggest is any kind of tobacco use. As much as 85% of oral cancer is linked to tobacco. Frequent and heavy alcohol consumption is another risk factor that can be avoided, as is too much sun exposure (which can lead to lip cancer), HPV, and not prioritizing oral hygiene habits. 🦷
Symptoms of oral cancer include persistent lip or mouth sores that don`t heal, odd lumps on the lip, mouth, throat, or neck, strange thickness in the cheek, numbness in the tongue or mouth, red or white patches inside the mouth, difficulty chewing or swallowing, a sensation like something is stuck in the throat, and even chronic bad breath. The default image that pops into our heads when we think of braces is usually of a teenage orthodontic patient, but more and more adults are getting their teeth straightened. It`s generally more ideal to get braces as a teen, but no one is too old to get a straighter smile. 😁
Even people who had braces as teens might end up needing them again, because our teeth shift constantly over the course of our lives. Enamel loss, tooth grinding, tooth loss, and something as simple as persistently mouth-breathing, leaning one`s head on one`s hand, or stomach-sleeping can cause shifting. 😬
Good dental hygiene habits, side-sleeping and back-sleeping, and nose-breathing are all better for dental alignment, but they can`t undo shifting what already happened, and that`s where orthodontic treatment comes in. Teeth of any age will respond to orthodontic appliances, and adult patients have one advantage over their teen counterparts: they are more mature and better able to follow the orthodontist`s extructions to the letter.
