THE ONE PERCENT PATHOLOGY AND THE MYTH OF CAPITALISM
30 second Preview/Promo Part ONE
30 second
Preview/Promo Part TWO
Dr. Michael Parenti gave this keynote speech for the 4th Annual People's Movement Assembly at Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington in October, 2012. He talked about economics, neo-liberalism, globalization and the history of capitalism. Parenti spoke and wrote about these topics long before most other academics dared mention – and much less critique –capitalism, the chosen economic form in the US, and really the world.

Raised in a working class Italian family in East Harlem, New York City, Parenti went on to receive his Ph.D. in political science at Yale in 1962. His academic career was cut short by his dismissal after he was arrested for protesting the US war on Vietnam. Parenti became an independent scholar, lecturer and author of over 20 books. And he remained an activist as well.

Thanks to Ed Mays from Pirate TV, Seattle, for this recording. You can see the film of this talk at  <http://www.piratetvseattle.com/>

THE FACE OF IMPERIALISM
A talk on Parenti's most recent book

Preview/Promo Part ONE
"The Face of Imperialism will be hated by those who run the Empire, and it will be loved by people around the world - many of them indigenous peoples - who are defending themselves against the Empire." That's what the author Andre Vltchek wrote for the jacket of Dr. Michael Parenti's most recent book.

Parenti is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. After receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Yale Parenti has taught at colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. He wrote 23 books, among them: Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, History as Mystery, Against Empire and God and His Demons. He risked and ended his promising academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam.

Parenti has written about empire, history, the media, theology, and socialism in his decades as an activist and teacher. However one topic has intrigued him more than others. He once wrote that "Imperialism has been the most powerful force in world history over the last five centuries, carving up whole continents, oppressing indigenous peoples and obliterating entire civilizations. Yet, it is seldom accorded any serious attention by our academics, media, and political leaders."

Michael Parenti
THE PATHOLOGY OF WEALTH

The first talk of 2012 by the social critic and noted author Michael Parenti fit perfectly into the debates of the time, that of the One versus the 99% and the finally no longer taboo question: What exactly is CAPITALISM? Parenti is debunking some of the myths of capitalism: That it creates jobs, peace, democracy and wealth - and more. In Part TWO Parenti describes the pathologies of capitalism by its inability to respond to climate change. Quoting a businessman in a New Yorker cartoon he reads: "While the end of the world scenario will be rife with unimaginable horrors, ..the pre-end period will be filled with unprecedented opportunities." Also in this segment arguments for the benefits of socialism in areas of our lives that should not be managed under the profit system. He lists health care, energy, and transportation.

Michael Parenti spoke on January 6, 2012, at the La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, CA. He is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. Raised in a working class district of New York City, Parenti went on to earn a Ph.D. from Yale and lost his chance at an academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam.

Michael Parenti:
THE STRUGGLE FOR HISTORY
Dissident Truth and Official Deception
In this talk Michael Parenti quotes Winston Churchill who said to his fellow party members: “History will be kind to us because I plan to write it.” Far from being an objective account of events history bears the mark of its writer, the omissions of the censors, and the interests of those who benefit from making it. In this speech Parenti shows how to take the recording of history back from politicians, the media, professors, clergy, and business people.

Michael Parenti is one of the nation's leading progressive political analysts. With roots in a working class Italian district of New York and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale Michael Parenti has become an internationally known lecturer. He is the author of over twenty books.

Michael Parenti:

How I Became an Activist
Parenti rarely talks about his life. How does a NYC street kid get accepted to Yale? Hoe does he lose the privilege of his PhD. in an arrest at a demonstration against the war on Vietnam, and become an internationally acclaimed author and lecturer?

Michael Parenti grew up in a poor, working class Italian community in New York City. When he received his PhD in political science from Yale in 1962 he was the success and pride of his family. He risked and ended his academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam. Ultimately the choice he made then was a good one. He now is an independent political writer and thinker and author of over 20 books. Invitations to speak come from all over North America. His topics are history, fascism, US Imperialism, globalization and terrorism. His writings have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Michael Parenti
IDEOLOGY AND CONSPIRACY
From: Understanding Deep Politics Conference, Santa Cruz, CA. - May 14/16 2010
In this entertaining talk, rich with historic references, Parenti describes the right-wing agenda of dismantling social democracy while calling anybody who describes this as a purposeful strategy a conspiracy theorist. He shows that this strategy began right after World War II but culminates now as powerful segment of right wing media and the GOP have moved so far to the right that they have overshot their popular base. Meanwhile democrats, including Obama, unable or unwilling to formulate the social democratic alternative, still talk of bipartisan approaches.

VOTING IN THE USA
How the Vote was Won and Lost
If the right to vote is taken as a measure of a vibrant democracy, the United States came off to a bad start. Dr. Michael Parenti says that the most interesting list from the period of 1787 is the rather long one of people who were not allowed to vote - and he names all of them. Also, in Part TWO, the many ways in which votes have been stolen during the Bush administration.

This archival recording is a primer on the history of voting and the day to day efforts to make democracy come alive that shows Parenti at his best as historian and engaged political thinker.

Parenti is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. After receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Yale Parenti has taught at colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. Parenti risked and ended his academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam.  He is a prolific author and an engaging speaker. He serves on the board of judges for Project Censored and is the author of 22 books, among them: Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, History as Mystery, and - most recently - God and His Demons.

Michael Parenti
Political Liberties and Economic Democracy

From the University of Hartford Series: CIVIL LIBERTIES IN THE 21st CENTURY

In his November 2009 lecture at the University of Hartford Dr. Michael Parenti answers intriguing questions about democracy. Is US democracy a result of capitalism as some claim - or does it exist - such as it is - in spite of the current economic system. AND did the founding fathers even envision a democratic system - and why were so many of them opposed to democracy.

Parenti is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. This is part one of his one hour lecture. He was introduced by the President of the University of Hartford, Walter Harrison. After receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Yale Parenti has taught at colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. Parenti grew up in a conservative, catholic, working class Italian community in New York city. He is a prolific author and an engaging speaker. He serves on the board of judges for Project Censored and is the author of 22 books, among them: Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, History as Mystery, and - most recently - God and His Demons.

GOD AND HIS DEMONS
This is Dr. Michael Parenti's first talk on his most recent book: God and His Demons. The 2010 book covers the many evils committed in the name of godly virtue throughout history, and the threat posed by fundamentalists and theocratic reactionaries.

Parenti is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. He is a prolific author and an engaging speaker. Parenti grew up in a conservative, catholic, working class Italian community in New York city. Michael Parenti:
CAPITALISM'S APOCALYPSE
Why the rich can't save anybody - not even themselves

Parenti predicted the financial crisis and said that giant corporate capitalism - by it's very nature - is an apocalyptic system. When unregulated the built in elements of ever increased growth may well bring the whole system down. And he described the growing national debt not as a tragic mistake but as a means to shift ever more money from the tax payers to the financial institutions in the form of interest payments. This speech is an analysis of the many structural flaws of a capitalist system that puts it on a permanent collision course with democracy. Recorded on August 23, 2008 at the closing reception for Maria Gilardin's art show.

Contrary Notions
City Light books in San Francisco's North Beach was filled to capacity for the book party of Michael Parenti's most recent work: Contrary Notions. This is a rich selection from the writings of a life time on history, empire, wealth, class power, ideology and much more. Parenti goes where few political analysts dare to go and - with acerbic wit -  makes transparent how he arrives at his conclusions. This excerpt of his 45 minute talk addresses taboo subjects such as the murder of the town of New Orleans and 9/11.

DIVERSITY AND ORTHODOXY IN THE NEWS MEDIA
This August 28, 2008 analysis of the media is Parenti's most up-to-date contribution. He gave the keynote speech for the Modern Media Censorship lectures by Project Censored. Each year Project Censored <http://www.projectcensored.org/> gives awards for the most censored news stories of the year. Parenti lists important criteria by which to judge media bias, ranging from ownership to labeling, false objectivity and sensationalism, omission, outright lies and the denial of causality with the famous theory of "stuff happens".

Michael Parenti has written and lectured on the mainstream media for decades. His key book on the topic is "Inventing Reality - The politics of the News Media."

CONSPIRACY & CLASS POWER
One of Parenti's most influential archival speeches

This is an in-depth analysis of the modern state and the exercise of power behind the scenes. The speech is also an important historic document. Given in 1993 it issues a warning of the use of deception to justify going to war. The speech also explains the expansion of the deregulated free market that would lead to a financial crisis as we see it today. The speech on Conspiracy and Class Power was lost for several years and only recently discovered in the collection of a listener in Seattle.  Michael Parenti spoke before an overflow audience in Berkeley, CA.

Michael Parenti is an internationally known author and lecturer. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale in 1962 and is one of the nation's leading progressive political thinkers.  His highly informative and entertaining books and talks have reached a wide range of audiences in North America and abroad. STOP the Pesticide Spray of the Bay Area
Parenti weighs in on the Apple Moth eradication
What do Homeland Security and FEMA have to do with the California Department of Food and Agriculture's plans to spray the San Francisco Bay Area with pesticides? Is this more dangerous to us and our rights than to the light brown apple moth? Parenti says that 50 other states have plans for similar  eradication programs - so this is NOT a local issue.
UPDATE:
After this program was recorded the California Department of Food and Agriculture announced on June 19 that they would suspend the spraying of urban areas. They still plan to spray forested areas and use ground spraying of the controversial pesticide. Parenti says:" This is a tactical retreat to preserve the whole notion of the pesticide war against any bug and weed that they declared an invasive public enemy.

THESE TWO PROGRAMS WERE CONSIDERED LOST
- I LOCATED COPIES OF THE MASTERS:

Michael Parenti:
The JFK Assassination and the Gangster Nature of the State
When Oliver Stone’s movie JFK opened in December 1991 a huge PR campaign was mobilized against the film. Even progressives spoke out. Noam Chomsky wrote in support of the Warren Commission's findings – in contrast Michael Parenti gave one of his highly acclaimed talks criticizing the lone assassin theory. The bitter questions that haunted defenders and critics alike was whether government agencies of a democratic country would do such a thing as assassinate an elected President.

In this talk Michael Parenti turns to that question first – he examines, in part one, what he calls “the gangster nature of the state.” In part two he goes over details of the assassination and critiques The Nation, The Progressive, Chomsky and Cockburn. He spoke in Berkeley, CA, on the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination. This is one of many "standing ovations" talks by Parenti. The master for this program was lost and this appears to be the only copy of the original recording.

Michael Parenti:
Theocracy VS. Democracy - The Political Uses of Religion
The full program is 29 minutes long (no Part Two)

Michael Parenti says that democracy can't survive under religious rule – whatever that religion may be. Parenti's warning in this archival recording is as timely and urgently expressed as it was when this speech was first given during the second term of the Reagan administration. This talk is also very funny. Parenti explains how God may be considered as a "founding father" and why Woody Allen calls him an underachiever. It is easy to extend this timeless analysis to the present circumstances.

With roots in a working class Italian district of New York and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale Michael Parenti has become an internationally known writer and lecturer. He is the author of twenty books.

Michael Parenti:

REAL HISTORY

A six part (3 hour) lecture series on three audio CDs.
The most popular of all his speeches on history.

Purchase individually or get the three CD set for $25.

CD Number ONE:

THE MYTH OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS

As the United States government claims to spread democracy around the world and is deeply involved in ghost writing constitutions for other countries, the spotlight falls back on this country. Is the current US system a democracy, - has it ever been one? In The Myth of the Founding Fathers Michael Parenti takes us back to the early days of the republic. Who were the founding fathers, what were their goals in writing the US constitution? Who did they exclude and who did they favor? What was their attitude towards slavery? How many of them actually wanted to create a monarchy? And who – in the end – ratified the constitution after it was written?

THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR AND THE RISE OF US IMPERIALISM

US foreign policy of our time is clearly interventionist. From the 1950s to today, from Korea, Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan and countless smaller wars in between the country has moved away from the sentiment once expressed by George Washington: “Beware of foreign entanglements“

When did all this begin? Who first expressed the desire to annex the island of Cuba – and when? The early African American emancipation movement inside the US was critical of US plans to attack Cuba. Why, their leaders asked, was the US government concerned about Spanish repression of the rights of Cubans while the repression of African Americans within the US was ignored. Why did the US attack the Philippines when it was Cuba that they wanted to take over? Why did the US give verbal support to the Cuban liberation movements against Spain while selling weapons to Spain to fight the poplar movement? The Spanish American War was an important turning point in the transition of the US to an imperial power.

CD Number TWO:

THE FUNCTIONS OF FASCISM

Parenti says that fascism is a new order and consciousness that served the same old power structure and promised to solve the ills of the many while protecting the interests of the few. He answers in detail who financed the Fascist parties and what services the fascists rendered in return. Many of the measures enacted by fascists were frighteningly similar to those enacted today: They include the privatization of state owned enterprises, reduction of corporate taxes and inheritance taxes, defeat of unions, and the suspension of civil liberties.
THE REAL CAUSES OF WORLD WAR II

Who inside Germany was resisting the rise of Hitler and why were they not supported by Britain and France? Why did the Western Allies allow Hitler to take over Austria and Czechoslovakia? Why did Britain and France refuse to enter an anti fascist alliance with the Soviet Union? Why did Britain and France do nothing while Hitler conquered Denmark and Norway even though they had finally already declared war against Germany in 1939? The West, says Parenti, saw Hitler as a bulwark against communism and the Soviet Union and was hoping that the two countries would bleed each other white.

CD Number THREE:

PSYCHO-HISTORY

A considerable number of historians, political scientists and psychologists have begun to rely on psychology to explain political phenomena. They treat individuals as driven by covert, personal emotions, distorting our understanding of political life. Using the examples of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and US President Herbert Hoover Parenti proves what is wrong with that.
BURNING OF BOOKS

The burning of books creates a powerful symbol, to this day people kill and die over such an action. In this reading from Michael Parenti's History as Mystery a book burning story is told that is deeper, and maintained for centuries longer than any of these efforts before or after. Parenti discloses who the biggest purveyor of book burnings of the last two millennia was and how the real perpetrators and academics tried to shift the blame. (Read by Maria Gilardin)

When Parenti's book History as Mystery was published by City Lights in San Francisco Daniel Ellsberg, who made history by disclosing the Pentagon papers and the real causes of the war on Vietnam, wrote: Michael Parenti unveils the falsified history, from the early Christian church to the present, a fascinating, darkly revelatory tale. History as Mystery contains many more intriguing chapters from the Inquisition and Joan of Arc to the way present day text books distort labor history.

Z-Net COMMENTARIES
Written from late 2005 to to late 2006 and published in Z-Net, these commentaries address the urgent issues of our time.

PART ONE

HOW THE FREE MARKET KILLED NEW ORLEANS and
RIGHT WING JUDICIAL ACTIVISM

How the Free Market Killed New Orleans
Parenti explains how the free market system was instrumental in the destruction of New Orleans and the deaths of so many residents – and ultimately in the total mismanagement of the rescue operations.

Right Wing Judicial Activism
In his commentary on Right Wing Judicial Activism Parenti proves how right-wing judicial activists – from the Civil War to now – have stretched the constitution in matters of slavery, segregation, child labor, the first amendment, and the awarding of the presidency to George W. Bush.

PART TWO
GOVERNMENT BY GIVEAWAY and
GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN VENEZUELA

Government by Giveaway
Parenti's commentary on Government by Giveaway was written in response to the cuts by the Bush administration of $42 billion from the human services budget. Parenti assembles a long list of government handouts to Corporate America, including tax cuts for corporations and the superrich, hidden and not so hidden subsidies to transnational corporations, allowing big business to exploit the nation's oil, coal and mineral reserves on public land for a pittance, tariff protections and trade supports, loopholes for agribusiness and much more. In the end it becomes obvious that, compared to corporate America, ordinary working Americans get the least support while carrying the heaviest financial burden.

Good Things are Happening in Venezuela
Parenti returned from Venezuela with an inspiring and long list of “good things” that are happening there - from education, health care, indigenous rights, worker and farming cooperatives, and resistance to neo-liberal plans for privatization of the oil industry.
