My experience:
I've owned two hacked western digital live plus (WDTVLIVE+) for a while now and I had them both hacked to run wdlxtv (amazing software from brad that really made the device truely remarkable and customizable). I enjoyed being able to telnet into them over my local network and make changes as well as providing high quality msheets and artwork when selecting the movies or tv shows. This process was VERY time consuming. With hundreds of mkv movies in a collection, making all the msheets became a pain that I didn't have time for. The wdtvlive+ is great device and I'm glad so much additional development has gone into it.
I owned an apple tv before that which I had boxee installed on. Great software then.
The Boxee Box:
Its bigger that the wdtvlive+ but its cool looking and its a welcome addition to my entrainment center, it looks good. I have no problems with sound or overheating yet so I'm happy about that. Setup was quick and easy. It connected to the network on the first try and updated itself and rebooted. No problems here. I'm quite happy with the boxee GUI, it looks very impressive on my massive tv. OOOO AHHHH, especially with hundreds of my HD movies to select from. The remote is the perfect size and keyboard is plenty big for me. I like it more than wdtvlive+ remote for sure. Once the webserver was activated in the settings, I was easily able to drag and drop files from my mac onto the locally attached hard drives connected to the boxee box (yes read/write over the network which seemed to a be a problem for some other people, I have no idea what they are talking about, I have full read/write from snow leopard as well as windows 7, it worked for me without any addtional steps). The box easy connected to all the shares on my network (both osx and win7 computers, all shares are there and work fine). As far as playback, I have yet to find a movie in my collection that hasn't played, they all have worked.
My problems/things dlink/boxee need to work on:
1) The artwork process is very slow, wish there was a faster automated process for collection movie/tv show artwork. Come on people, its 2010, I should be able to load artwork for hundred of movies and tv shows in under 10 minutes. Get this fixed, I will be happier.
2) I have a very reliable internet connection at home and haven't had any problems for months. The couple days I've had the boxee box installed on my network...my internet seems to be dropping a couple times a day for some reason. I cannot tell if its the boxee box causes internet problems or its my isp and just a coincident. who knows but if anyone else has this problem let me know. Maybe we can put our heads together and figure this out.
As for the wdtvlive, I plan on putting a wdtvlive+ in one bedroom and the other wdtvlive+ in another bedroom. The boxee will stay in my living room/entertainment center where I watch a majority of my movies and tv shows.
To sum up: for all those people having problems, you cannot expect everything to work out of the box (which it did for me for some reason) because everyone has different types of network and setups that may cause various problems, its not as easy as you think. If you have problems, then work as a group to get it resolved or hacked to your liking or make it known to boxee. Don't just rant and be an idiot, the boxee box is a good VERSION 1 product that I'm happy with even though it needs a few tweeks...(quickly please dlink/boxee, people are threatening to return their box).
KEEP IN MIND: I only use the boxee box for LOCAL PLAYBACK OF FILES. I don't care about netflix or any of that online streaming crap. LOCAL ONLY USER!
Don't worry, I'm not returning the box, I like it, but here are my comments thus far:
1) I like the boxee box more than my two WDTVLIVE+'s. So well done on that.
2) MY MAIN PROBLEM: I need the boxee box to monitor local folders constantly. If I add a movie to a folder, I would like the artwork to appear in movies or shows within 5/10 minutes on the HOME SCREEN.
3) One reason I wanted the boxee box was to install the ESPN3 app for football, I cannot get this app to load games, its just black.
4) It has played every video file I've thrown at it which is amazing because I have a lot.
5) No read/write networking problems YET, everything is accessible. I'm happy I'm not having the same issues other people seem to be having with network sharing.
6) I was worried about reliability, so I attached a 2TB hdd to the boxee box and started a 1TB transfer over the network to that local bb hdd. It transferred all 1TB without restarting or crashing.Well done.
7) I use this device MAINLY for local playback of files WITH the hope of ESPN3 support. I really don't care about all the online streaming crap. SO I was hoping for options allowing the device more orientated toward users that use it for local. FOR EXAMPLE, the main screen linking to local files not online content. Online content should be AN ADDON accessible within other menu's. LOCAL USERS WANT THE BOXEE centered around local files. I don't like having to go search the menus for my list of local content
8) subtitles should be OFF by default, I hate having to switch them off every time I start a movie.
9) Filtering by Movie Genre.
10) PROBLEM: Playlists for music!!!!!!!! DUH!!!
For various reasons, I was split mostly between the boxee and the roku. Ultimately I picked the boxee... what a mistake.
When I first received the device, I powered up and upgraded to the latest software build.
I started out with the Daily Show and got a message stating that boxee can't play flash... Seriously?! I had a difficult time believing this, so I hit the boxee forums right away and discovered that their latest firmware updated somehow disabled flash... I tried several times, from different sources, but could not get the Daily Show to work.
Other people may comment that this was a temporary issue related to the build, or prescribe some various work around, and they may well be right... but looking through posts on the forums over a couple years, I've noticed all sorts of issues surrounding flash over the various updates. Sometimes outages lasted weeks at a time. Frankly, in my opinion, if you have to constantly be doing work-arounds it doesn't really work... On my laptop, flash just works for example.
Already this was a major disappointment for me, as the daily show is one of the few shows that I watch.
But, I thought I'd try out a few more shows and give the box a chance.
So I tried out a Southpark episode next. Well, this time it streamed, but what came out on my TV was absolutely *terrible* in terms of image quality. It looked like a 480pixel image blown up on my tv, all of the characters came out hazy. Just for a comparison, I pulled up the same episode on my laptop and ran it simultaneously for a side-by-side comparison. My laptop (nowhere close in quality to my plasma HD TV) was showing a MUCH better video feed than the tv. The stream was so bad as to be almost unwatchable.
Beginning to get a sinking feeling as to this purchase, I went to search for the Simpsons. Well, unfortunately
boxee doesn't seem to get the simpsons, or any content commonly available on hulu for that manner. I was aware that hulu plus was not available, but for whatever reason I had thought that free content on hulu would be available on the boxee... Already, between these three shows, I had pretty much decided to return this.
But for the sake of giving this a chance, I tried out a number of other TV shows, internet content (TED Talks), netflix, etc. The video quality wasn't all as bad as Southpark, but I really question whether the boxee really delivers HD content... almost every stream looked better on my laptop. My guess is that they stream HD in some low pixel format (maybe 480, 720) or whatever, and then just scale it up to fit the screen... Whatever it is they do, something is definitely lost because the content simply did not appear to be that great on my tv.
Other issues with the box...
-It was always buffering... I don't quite understand why. I have a 17 MB/s connection at my apartment. On my laptop (also wireless) I can click at practically any point on a video stream and will not have to wait for any buffer time. It's not my connection, and it's not my router... Its the crappy hardware that D-Link designed for the box.
-The software was extremely buggy... I attempted several times to change the pixel settings and / or color settings after upgrading my firmware, and every time I attempted to change any kind of display settings, the boxee box just crashed - screen went black and froze. I was hoping that perhaps if I set the display to 720 pixels, the video quality might look better somehow, but I couldn't change any display setting with the box turning my tv black and freezing.
I'm honestly blown away by what a piece of crap this is. As someone who works in robotics (we make hardware and software packages) as a developer I would be personally ashamed to release any hardware / software combination this mindbogglingly bad.
I was willing to put up with a few hiccups here and there so long as this box was capable of grabbing internet content (tv shows, movies, etc) from various places and aggregate it on this box, but it fails miserably at this core mission.
It doesn't seem capable of playing flash, it displays some fairly mainstream content with *TERRIBLE* image quality, and when it does display mainstream content with half-decent quality I'm highly annoyed because it still looks better on my laptop... Honestly now, what's the point of getting an HD TV to have bad image quality?
And with the buffering problems, and various other software problems, I'm frankly amazed that they have continued to release this software. They run great marketing, and on the surface, the menus appear really nice, but man, when you actually want this to *DO* something, it just SUCKS.
I can definitively say that my laptop offers a better experience (I don't mean plugging my laptop into my TV, I mean my laptop screen going head-to-head with this piece of crap) for watching netflix, the daily shows, the simpsons, southpark, ted talks, and other random content.
I'll probably take another look at the roku, PS3, google tv, etc, but I simply cannot get over what a terrible piece of junk this is.
I cannot possibly understand how anyone would give this 4 or 5 stars.

My only complaint is the lack of playlist or playing multiple files one after the other. You have to manually start each video file one after the other.
- For what it is (a budget streaming platform?), it does the job really well.
- Perfect if you have your own file server.
- Easy connections: HDMI, optical audio, etc.
Cons:
- You cannot have more than one in the same house because the remotes control affects all Boxees within range.
- A bit laggy and slow at times, especially booting up and rendering long lists.
- No updates for a very long time.
- Not close to the latest XBMC development going on.
