In a unanimous vote, Gladewater ISD trustees have approved a four-day school week for the upcoming academic year, citing teacher shortages. Gladewater ISD joins 30 other East Texas school districts that have opted to shorten school weeks in a bid to attract and retain educators.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik's leadership is under fire. She has been criticized for her recent testimony to Congress over growing concerns about antisemitism on college campuses — and her handling of subsequent on-campus protests. More than 100 protesters at Columbia were arrested last week after Shafik asked New York City police to clear a pro-Palestinian encampment. The move did little to stop new protests from springing back up at Columbia and on campuses nationwide. University faculty have filed a motion of censure against her, and a number of state and House Republicans have begun calling for her resignation.

It looks like the third time will be the charm as the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival prepares for The Rolling Stones. The festival spans two weekends and is set to open Thursday with dozens of acts on 14 stages. The Stones play next Thursday, and tickets for that day of music have long been sold out. Festival organizers thought they had landed the band for the 50th Jazz Fest in 2019 but the appearance was canceled then because lead singer Mick Jagger had heart surgery. They tried again in 2021, but a surge in COVID-19 cases ultimately forced the fest to cancel.

The Mount Pleasant Fire Department has provided fire protection throughout Titus County for at least 50 years, working alongside volunteer fire departments to battle house fires and respond to car wrecks. That relationship will end in October. Titus County plans to open its own fire department by then, and the Mount Pleasant department won’t be helping the agency.
